The goal of the Communicable Disease Program in Tehama County is to reduce the spread and limit the adverse effects of infectious diseases within our community. We fight the spread of contagious diseases by:

  • Investigating who is sick and who else might get sick
  • Offering sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing and treatment for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV

  • Providing case management services to those who are sick

  • Ordering or coordinating lab tests to confirm the presence of a disease or virus

  • Collecting data on reportable diseases

The most common illnesses and conditions reported to Public Health in Tehama County include Chlamydia, Chronic Hepatitis C, Gonorrhea, Animal Bites/Exposures, Campylobacter, Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI), Syphilis, and Salmonella.

Communicable diseases are diseases that can be spread from person to person and sometimes from animals to people. Healthcare providers and laboratories are required to report certain diseases and conditions to Public Health for case management and statistical purposes. Public Health uses this information to protect the community through communicable disease case investigations. In the case of certain diseases, such as measles and bacterial meningitis, Public Health works to ensure that a sick person receives treatment, and that friends and family are protected as well.

Healthcare providers who need to report a suspected public health emergency should contact Public Health immediately at 530-527-6824; or if after hours, call the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office at 530-529-7900 and ask for the Public Health Emergency Contact.
